What is Neurodivergence?
Neurodivergence is an umbrella term that refers to the normal diversity around our abilities and how we process information. The term is often used in reference to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and ADHD, but it is meant to be an inclusive term that can and does apply to so much more. Being neurodivergent in a society that doesn’t always provide the appropriate systems of support and inclusion for everyone can be inherently stressful, exhausting, and sometimes even traumatic.
Navigating changing societal and social norms, creating your own accommodations in work or educational spaces that aren’t inclusive, managing stress, processing different kinds of information, navigating relationships, and navigating sensory experiences can be overwhelming at times. It can be even more overwhelming when the ways society tells you to cope with those issues either don’t work or cause more harm.
